Wife, mum, daughter, sister ... friend
Rochelle Goulburn was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on 26 March 2013. Sixteen months later, she passed away surrounded by approximately 30 family members in the room with her.
Rochelle was vibrant, full of life, a social butterfly, and a loving, caring and loyal woman. In the sixteen months between diagnosis and death, she lived every day she could to its fullest. We enjoyed family holidays, engagements, weddings and milestone birthdays. She lived to see her first grandson turn one.
But during the sixteen months, Rochelle was undergoing gruelling treatment - 13 rounds of chemotherapy, 10 days of radiation and multiple drains to remove excess fluid from her abdomen. She lost her hair, her appetite and a hell of a lot of weight. She couldn’t eat and some days she couldn’t move from her bed. There was never-ending nausea, tingling in her fingertips and constant shivering as a side-effect of the chemotherapy. During the radiation there was continual abdominal pain as the lasers shot through her stomach to get to the pancreas.
However, despite her pain and discomfort she was determined and resilient. She fought on no matter what the cancer threw at her, calling chemo her 'friend' as it was keeping her alive.
Unfortunately, the treatment was not enough. Rochelle passed away on 3 August 2014, aged only 57.
We know that with increased funding, increased research will follow and with increased research, hopefully pancreatic cancer will become easier to diagnose with more treatment options to give other pancreatic cancer sufferers a better quality of life and give their families hope.
Ultimately, the 'holy grail' is that research will find an early detection test and even a cure to this common cancer.
